The second annual Santa Maria Valley Packers Invitational wrapped up at Elks Field on Sunday with the hosts holding on for a 12-6 victory over the Santa Maria Pilots, a game that saw every scoring push by the Packers answered by the Pilots
The Packers evened their record at 13-13 with the win, in which outfielder Justin Trejo (Livermore, CA) was 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored, while second baseman Arin Fowble (Owasso, OK) had three hits, and third baseman Wade Reynoso (Redwood City, CA) was 2-for-5 with three RBIs; Max Kautz (Palo Alto, CA) and Jacob Hummel (Peoria, AZ) also had two hits in the 17-hit attack for the Packers.
Starting pitcher Ryan Plum (Ventura, CA) allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings for his first victory of the season, but the Pilots made things interesting with a four-run seventh inning. The highlight for the Pilots (9-19) was a two-run inside-the-park homer by outfielder Chris Rivera, his second homer of the tournament. J.P. Maestas had three hits in the loss, while substitute Clarke Comer was 2-for-3.
The Packers hit the road for the next week, playing non-CCL games at the San Luis Obispo Blues on Tuesday and Wednesday nights (both games starting at 6:35 p.m.), before traveling to Santa Barbara for the Foresters' Rawlings California Cup: The Packers open Cup play at 11 a.m. on Thursday against the Conejo Oaks at UCSB's Uyesaka Stadium.
The Pilots return to action at home on Wednesday afternoon with a 4:30 p.m. game against the California Wahoos.
