Players will unite to form a common bond and are expected to demonstrate respect, discipline, pride, and hard work.
Why the Packers?
Many people have asked why the Santa maria Valley Packers were created. Why does Santa Maria need another baseball organization? The answer is simple and beneficial to the community as a whole. The coaching staff, Scott Nickason, Bryn Smith, Jim Allen, and Terry Newby, realized that they wanted to do more than just have fun and coach baseball. They wanted to give back to the Santa Maria Valley and promote the love of the game of baseball. The Valley has never had a baseball organization that took it upon itself to provide quality baseball and to give so much to its community. With the determination, dedication, devotion, and desire that the coaches have, it would seem that the community would respond and join the coaches in their vision.
With starting a new team, there seems to be lots of freedom and choices, but with those, come responsibilities. There were lots of discussions on what to focus and how to honor the heritage of the Santa Maria Valley. They chose the colors red, white, and blue to reflect Santa Maria's All-American City status. The team name is a direct nod to the Valley's long history of agriculture and vegetable/fruit packing. The next steps were then to determine how and what to give back to the community. The first decision was easy- the Santa Maria Valley Packers would be a non-profit organization. The Packers only need enough money to provide quality baseball for the Valley and to provide a quality experience for the collegiate baseball players who come to the area to play for the team and against the team.
The Santa Maria Valley Packers want to utilize baseball as a positive tool to teach the youth of the community the knowledge and enjoyment of the game, the skills to increase success, and life lessons. They plan on conductiong clinics for all levels of youth baseball and also for the coaches/parents involved with those teams. They also want to host little league teams before game nights during pre-game activities. The Packers believe in getting the community personally involved by allowing charities/non-profit organizations to "man" the gate in orfer to raise funds, to have "meet and greet" dinners with the players and sponsors, and to provide free admission to home games for the youth of the community. They also want to increase city revenue by bringing visitors and opposing teams to the Valley to showcase the great businesses. Also, the Packers want to provide quality baseball for the community to enjoy and to provide the best possible experience for collegiate baseball players nationwide to improve their skills and display their talent, in order to attain the highest level of baseball possible.
The bottom line and the simple answer to why the Packers have been created is that the coaches want to give back to Santa Maria and the Valley. The Santa Maria Valley Packers are about giving back and honoring the game of baseball. They believe in the true traditions of baseball and the value of community service. They look forward to creating a solid foundation of giving and baseball in Santa Maria.
